IIT BHU, previously known as the Institute of Technology of Banaras Hindu University, has undergone an upgrade to earn the status of an IIT. This change was approved by Lok Sabha on March 24, 2011 and formalized through the Institutes of Technology Amendment Bill 2011.
IIT BHU has a rich history dating back to 1919 when three engineering institutions were established by the visionary leader, Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya. These institutions, the Banaras Engineering College, College of Mining and Metallurgy, and College of Technology, merged in 1971 to form IT-BHU and provide a strong and integrated educational base.
Following recommendations from committees constituted by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, IT-BHU was transformed into IIT BHU in Varanasi. Despite being integrated with the Indian Institutes of Technology, Banaras Hindu University remains intact.
IIT BHU continues to carry forward the legacy of its founders and strive towards providing quality education in the fields of engineering and technology.
