Vidyasagar University is a state-government run university in Midnapore, West Bengal, India. Established in 1981, it was named after the renowned 19th century educationist and social worker, Pandit Iswar Chandra Bandyopadhyay. The university received recognition from the University Grants Commission under Section 12 B in 1990.
The idea of establishing the university was initiated by local organizations and was further supported by the Regional Education Association, Midnapore and the Ghani Committee appointed by the UGC. The committee believed that the compact area and manageable number of colleges in the district, along with the support of IIT, Kharagpur, made it an ideal location for a new university.
Today, the university comprises of 27 postgraduate departments and 46 undergraduate colleges. It offers a wide range of courses, including humanities, science, management, and vocational subjects, along with specialized courses. The university continues to provide education and opportunities for growth to students in the region.
Vidyasagar University offers a wide range of academic programs, including Master’s degrees in Arts, Commerce, Science, and Business Administration through its Directorate of Distance Education. The university also provides accommodation for students with 152 seats for girls and 174 for boys, along with reservation for SC, ST, and PH students.
The university boasts a well-equipped computer center with 400 nodes connected by a campus-wide LAN and internet services. The library has a collection of 75,000 volumes and subscribes to 135 current journals, all accessible through an automated system. The medical unit offers free medical advice and treatment for students, staff, and faculty, and the University Scientific Instrumentation Center provides research and consultancy services.
The university has established strong connections with institutions, NGOs, and government organizations through its Placement Cell, helping students in their career development. The Gandhian Studies Center has also been recognized by the University Grants Commission for its contributions to education.
Vidyasagar University is dedicated to promoting student health and wellbeing through sports and recreation. A range of sports events are organized regularly, including athletics, football, volleyball, kho-kho, swimming, and cricket. The university’s efforts have been recognized with a 3-star rating from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).
