The University of Kalyani was established in 1960 with a campus area of over 400 acres in Kalyani town. It caters mostly to the students of rural and backward areas. The University is presently offering twenty three post graduate programmes under four faculties. The University is providing academic guidance and leadership to 36 affiliated degree colleges located in the districts of Nadia, Murshidabad and parts of N. 24 Parganas. The standards of teaching in the affiliated colleges are monitored by a council for undergraduate studies, planning board and a nominated college development council (CDC) through a process of academic audit. The University has introduced a wide range of curricular options to train the students in different fields of specialisation through teaching, research, and extension. The extension and outreach activities, as well as innovative programmes of the Adult and Continuing Education Centre, INSPARC and the technical back-up unit of the university. In its campus planning, almost all the departments are housed in separate buildings, keeping sufficient scope for their extensions in the lush green campus of around 400 acres. The University is a member of Association of Indian Universities (AIU), Association Commonwealth Universities (ACU), Global University Network for Innovation (GUNI).
University Centres
Location and Transportation – It is located in Kalyani town, West Bengal, India, with the national highway (N.H.34) on one side and the river Ganga on the other. Kalyani university is located at about 55 k.m. from the city of Kolkata and about 45 k.m. from the Netaji Subhas International Airport at Dum Dum. The university campus is also well connected with rail. Nearest railway station being Kalyani Main / Kalyani Ghoshpara.

Facilities
Student Support and Progression – Financial assistance and scholarships for general students and state and UGC sponsored stipends for the SC and ST students are available as per State Government rules. Special provision has been made for the benefit of overseas students. This includes earmarking of 15% of the total number of seats over and above the normal intake for admission, one window service and accommodation in the hostels. The University has made a provision for feedback from, the students on, and redressal of, complaints relating to hostel facilities, examinations and general administration. This is done through Council of Students’ Welfare and Students’ Executive Council. A special Council has been established to check harassment of women.
Directorate of Open & Distance Learning – The University, with the help of Distance Education Council, IGNOU and other Universities of West Bengal has launched Directorate of Open & Distance Learning (DODL) at Post Graduate level for the students who are otherwise deprived of higher education and as such serving as a light house of the learning persons of all ages and sex, particularly to such persons who for different reasons, cannot undergo the higher courses of studies as regular full time students.
University Hostel – There are nine hostels in all for post-graduate students and research scholars – six for male and three for female students. Two hostels are earmarked for research scholars – one for male and the other for female. Admission to different Halls and Hostels of the University is made, generally, on the basis of the distance from the residence and family income of the regular students and Research Scholars. Regular students or Research scholars have to apply to the Dean, Students’ Welfare in prescribed Hostel Admission form along with following documents : Attested photo copies of (i) Admission Fees book, (ii) Residential document (Voter ID/Ration card), (iii) Distance certificate & Rail ticket, (iv) Family income certificate, (v) Caste certificate, (vi) Two copies of photograph etc.
Finishing School – Human resource Development Centre (HRDC) / Finishing school. The centre will offer six-month and other short-term certificate courses to improve the communication and soft skills along with basic understanding of computerized working environment. The regular students, those pursuing their graduation and post-graduation are eligible along with the passed out students from university / colleges.
Centre for Information Resource Management – At the CIRM, there are 35 terminals are connected under LAN and the 1MBPS leased line internet service provided by the BSNL (Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited), India. The teachers, scholars, students, officers and staffs of the University can access to this centralized facility. The Centre remains open from 10:15 a.m. to 6 p.m. on all working days. The CIRM is also providing the Internet facility on round the clock basis to all users in the university including teaching, administrative staff and research scholars, students. The internet facility is being provided through a 1:1- 2 Mbps Leased line from ERNET India and 1:1- 1 Mbps Leased line from BSNL. It also provides IT based training programmer to all types of users like in-house staff, research scholars, teachers, administrative staff and so on.
Central Library – It has 1,36443 books, 102 journals, periodicals and back volumes of numerous important journals. It also provides automation facilities, reprographic facilities, reference service, digital information services etc.
University Health Centre – Medical and health oriented services are rendered to the University community i.e. students, employees and their families and to some extent to the surrounding population. Health Centre has an Ambulance and a Self-Diagnostic unit i.e. X-ray check-up, routine experiments of blood, urine and stool (Cytology, Biochemistry and to some extent Serology). In addition to Medical Officers there are also paramedical staffs like Pathologist, Radiologist, Pharmacist, Nurses, Dressers etc.
University Gymnasium – There is a well-built and fairly managed Gymnasium, under the supervision of the Department of Physical Education. Students, in general including hostel boarders can enjoy multi-gym facilities under the able guidance of the teachers and coaches belonging to the above mentioned department.
University Guest House – The University has a two storied furnished Guest House located near the entrance of the main campus. There are two single-bed and four double-bed rooms. One of the double-bed rooms has air-condition facility. Persons visiting the University for academic and administrative purposes are cordially accommodated to enjoy the facility of the Guest House at very reasonable rate. University has another Guest House for providing temporary accommodation to Guests of the University.
University Auditorium and Lecture Halls – University has two A.C Auditorium- Vidyasagar Sabhagriha and Acharya Prafulla Chandra Sabhakaksha and two non-A.C auditorium- Samir Dasgupta Mancha and Bibhuti Bhusan Kaksha for holding seminars, symposia and cultural activities of the students. Besides the auditoriums there are about 15 Seminar and Lecture halls attached to different academic departments.
Cultural Activities – Various cultural activities are being organized through the following four stages:
A good number of students participate in these cultural competitions every year and they have secured merit prizes at zonal, National and even International level. The activities involve music, dance, literary, theatre and fine arts activities.
Placement Cell – The placement office of the university caters mainly to the students of the faculty of engineering, technology & management. Students concerned are from M.tech.(CSE), M.C.A. (Departments of computer science & engg.), M.B.A. (Department of business administration) and B.Tech.(I.T. & E.I.E.) (University science instrumentation centre) courses. Assessment, training and development program for the concerned students are arranged accordingly. The University has initiated a process of obtaining accreditation by T.C.S., a renowned multinational software company from India, which will eventually help all the students in the long run.
NSS – There are about 50 NSS Units having around 5000 NSS volunteers under various university NSS activities.
SC/ST Cell – The Coaching Centre for SC/ST Students for NET Examinations remains open in all the days in a week. The classes are held in Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.
Industry-University Partnership Cell – To bridge the gap between the University and the Industry the Executive Council of the University of Kalyani has constituted a committee in the name Industry Institute Partnership Cell, Kalyani University with the Finance Officer as convenor. The activities of the said strategic alliance, which is felt necessary to compete the global socio-economic changes will be Consultancy & Counselling, Systems Development, testing and calibration instruments for industries etc.
