The National Institute of Technology Durgapur, formerly known as Regional Engineering College, was established in 1960 by the Indian government to advance engineering education and promote national integration. It is a fully funded, autonomous premier technical institute that offers degrees in B.Tech, M.C.A, M.Sc, M.B.A, M.Tech, and Ph.D. Declared a national importance institute in 2007, NIT Durgapur follows the admission process set by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, with a few seats reserved for foreign students. The Institute spans 187 acres and is fully residential and co-educational, accommodating about 2500 boys and 500 girls in its hostels. The annual undergraduate intake is 700 students.

The National Institute of Technology in Durgapur is a residential institute with seven hostels for boys and two for girls, as well as residential quarters for most of the teachers and staff. The modern Guest House, located beside the Director’s Bungalow, offers hospitality to the Institute’s guests and has advanced facilities including a beautiful garden and Wi-Fi. There are two canteens located near the main academic building and a library with over 1.2 lac volumes, including books, journals, and e-books. The library also provides access to digital resources through DELNET, American Center Library, NPTEL, and INDEST-AICTE Consortium. The Institute has advanced facilities including an XRD Equipment for defect studies, a High Voltage Laboratory, a Computer Centre with CAD Laboratories, and IT facilities with specialized engineering software and a campus-wide LAN. The departments have their own computer laboratories and the Institute is connected to the internet with a dedicated 54 Mbps 24/7 connection.
