BESU, established in 1856, is a leading engineering university in India with a legacy of excellence in engineering and applied sciences. Once a constituent college of the University of Calcutta, it was elevated to a Deemed University in 1992 and became Bengal Engineering and Science University (BESU) in 2005. The university is located at Shibpur, Howrah and has a long history, starting as the Civil Engineering College in Kolkata and evolving over time to become one of the premier engineering institutes in India.

Location and Transport – The University is located in the sylvan surrounding on the western bank of the river Hooghly, opposite the city of Kolkata (formerly Calcutta) which is connected with all the major Indian cities as well as to some foreign ones by rail and air and also by the Golden Quadrangle Road Network presently nearing completion. The nearest Railway Station is Howrah, which is 6km from the University Campus and the Airport is at a distance of 30km from the Main Gate.

Bengal Engineering and Science University (BESU) was established in the year 1976. It has a student population of about 2500 and 13 hostels, including one for girls. The university provides guaranteed accommodation for international students as well as faculty members and staff. BESU has a Computer Centre that provides adequate computing infrastructure, including high-performance computing facilities for students, research scholars, faculty, and staff. The centre has two laboratories equipped with 30 shoppingmode Pentium 4 PCs connected through a LAN to a central server and has Internet facilities. BESU has a well-equipped Video Conferencing Center with audio-visual facilities like Polycom. The university library is one of the largest and oldest technical libraries in Southeast Asia with a collection of 1.3 lakh books and 40,000 bound volumes of journals. BESU has a hospital to cater to the health needs of students and staff and provides 24-hour ambulance service. The university has uninterrupted power supply and its own captive generation plant, and there are several departments responsible for maintenance of various services in the campus. In 2005, BESU was ranked 10th among top engineering institutes in India by India Today.
