Aliah University (AU) is an autonomous institution overseen by the Department of Minority Affairs and Madrasah Education in the Government of West Bengal. It is recognized as a minority educational institution according to the Aliah University Act of 2007, Section 3 (3). The university has a rich history dating back to 1780, when it was established as the Mohammedan College of Calcutta, the first educational institution in India established by Governor General Warren Hastings. Originally established to promote the study of Arabic, Persian, and Islamic law, the institution was later upgraded to Calcutta Madrasah College and finally to Aliah University through the Aliah University Act of 2007 passed by the West Bengal Legislative Assembly. The university aims to advance higher education for socially and educationally backward minority communities.
The West Bengal Government has allocated a 12-acre campus for Aliah University at New Town, Rajarhat. The foundation stone for the “Aliah University Campus” was laid by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on December 15th, 2011.

Aliah University is a minority educational institution located in West Bengal, India. It was originally established as the Mohammedan College of Calcutta in 1780, and has since been upgraded to Aliah University through the Aliah University Act of 2007. The University has been established to advance higher education for socially and educationally backward minority classes.
The University has two hostel facilities, one for male students and one for female students, both located in convenient locations in Kolkata. Aliah University also has a well-stocked library with a diverse collection of books, including literature in Islamic Theology, Islamic Jurisprudence & Law, and Arabic, as well as in Science, Engineering, Management Science, Humanities, and Social Sciences.
The students of Aliah University are actively involved in extra-curricular activities and have access to their own web portal. The University also organizes an annual fest named Aliah Utsav. Additionally, 3% of the seats are reserved for Physically Disadvantaged (PD) candidates who meet the eligibility criteria and are certified by a Medical Board.
The University has seen numerous achievements over the years, including a student winning an all India competition, participation in extempore competition, and a student project exhibition. These achievements are a testament to the dedication and hard work of Aliah University’s students and faculty.
