IIT Ropar is one of the eight new Indian Institutes of Technology, which started operations in 2008. The Institute began with 40 students each in Computer Science, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering and was temporarily located at IIT Delhi until it moved to its transit campus in Ropar in 2009. The government of Punjab has provided 500 acres of land near the banks of the Sutlej river for the permanent campus, which is in the planning stages. The medium of instruction at IIT Ropar is English and the Institute follows the semester system. The academic year starts in July and ends in June, with a continuous evaluation process to measure student performance. IIT Ropar is located in the town of Rupnagar, near Chandigarh, and is well connected by road and rail, with the nearest airport in Chandigarh.

Hostels – There are three hostels; two for boys and one for girls equipped with modern messing units in place and operational.
