The Parliament of India passed the Institutes of Technology Act in 1961, designating all IITs as institutions of national importance. IIT Kanpur was established in 1959, and now operates on a sprawling 1055-acre campus, one of the largest after IIT Kharagpur. The campus is also known for its diverse wildlife, including peacocks and other birds.
IIT Kanpur offers undergraduate and graduate programs in various branches of technology and science, including B.Tech. in Aerospace, Biological Science & Bioengineering, Chemical, Civil, Computer Science, Electrical, Metallurgy, and Mechanical Engineering. Integrated M.Sc. programs in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Statistics are also available, as well as an integrated M.Sc. in Economics.
The institute provides M.Tech. programs in all the engineering branches and interdisciplinary areas, such as Nuclear Engineering, Biological Sciences and Bioengineering, Laser Technology, Environmental Engineering, Materials Science, and Industrial and Management Engineering. Admittance to these programs is through the all-India examination known as GATE.
IIT Kanpur has a dual degree program that allows students admitted through JEE to complete both a B.Tech. and M.Tech. in five years. Science electives, including Quantum Physics, Modern Theories of Material Design, and Bio-Informatics and Computational Biology, are also offered to enhance the science content in engineering.
The institute has a student population of approximately 1450 undergraduates and 850 postgraduates, along with 300 faculty members and over 1500 supporting staff. It also boasts one of the finest scientific and technological libraries with an online information retrieval system available on the campus LAN.
