The Indian Institute of Technology Rajasthan (IITR), located at IIT Kanpur, is one of the new IITs established by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. With successful completion of its first academic year in 2008-09, the campus of IITR is set to be built in Jodhpur, spreading across 700 acres of land between Karwad and Jhipasni villages. The construction is planned to begin in late 2010.
IIT Kanpur has been assigned the task of incubating IITR, as per the MHRD’s order. Currently, IITR offers a 4-year B.Tech program in three branches: Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering, with an intake of 40 students per branch. The curriculum, fee structure, and other rules will be similar to those of IIT Kanpur. Students admitted to IITR will eventually be relocated to the new campus in Jodhpur and must give an undertaking to this effect.
Temporary Location – IIT Kanpur is situated on the Grand Trunk (GT) Road at Kalyanpur about 17 km away from Kanpur Central Railway Station.
Transportation – Kanpur is well connected by rail from all parts of India.
Proposed Location – IIT Rajasthan will be located about 22 Kms from Jodhpur city on National Highway 65 which connects Jodhpur to Nagaur.
IIT Rajasthan is a new IIT started by the Indian government. It is currently functioning at IIT Kanpur and will eventually be established in Jodhpur, Rajasthan. There are certain restrictions in place when arriving at IIT Kanpur, such as no laptops, personal computers, or vehicles allowed, and students will have to make their own housing arrangements. Warm clothing is required in November and there is no uniform required, but formal attire is needed for the orientation program. It is advised to get vaccinated against communicable diseases, open a bank account, and bring relevant medical papers and certificates. The Institute offers CPA (Compulsory Physical Activities), Merit-cum-Means scholarships, academic and emotional counselling, and a Shopping Centre.
