IIT Hyderabad was established in 2008, with its first batch of 111 B.Tech students. The institute offers B.Tech, M.Tech, and Ph.D. programs and initially started with three departments: CSE, EE, and ME. In 2009, the foundation stone was laid by Smt. Sonia Gandhi, Hon’ble Chairperson of UPA. The academic year 2009-10 saw the admission of 120 B.Tech students, 35 M.Tech students, and 10-15 Ph.D. students. The institute provides both course-based and research-oriented degree programs through its various departments. Currently, IIT Hyderabad is temporarily located on the premises of Ordnance Factory Medak in Yeddumailaram, Andhra Pradesh. The campus includes all the necessary facilities such as hostels, classrooms, offices, recreation, sports, and medical facilities. IIT Hyderabad follows a strict “No-Tolerance policy for Ragging” for its students, both on and off campus.

Departments
The Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IITH) offers a variety of facilities for students, including hostels, dining, library, research and development, transportation, student gymkhana, sports, student mentor program, laboratories and workshops, scholarships, and medical services.
In the hostels, two students share a room with enough space for two beds, study tables, chairs, and Godrej almirahs. There are also various leisure and recreational facilities available, such as a TV room, table-tennis room, computer room, and game room with indoor games like carrom and chess.
The dining hall, run by a private caterer, can seat 130 students and offers food for both the boys’ and girls’ hostels. There is also a canteen and another dining hall, “Little Place.”
The IITH library offers access to over 1,200 academic and 200 non-academic books, as well as magazines, newspapers, and DVDs. The library is open year-round (except on government holidays) with working hours of 8:00 AM to 11:00 PM from Monday to Friday and 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM on weekends.
IITH has a strong focus on research and development, with two funded projects underway in collaboration with the International Advanced Research Centre for Powder Metallurgy and New Materials and Kieo University and University of Tokyo. The institute has a master plan to create a signature campus for fostering inventions and innovations.
Transportation to IITH is convenient with the Patancheru depot (15km away) serving as a major bus hub and passenger trains available from Sharkerpally station. Buses and trains offer easy access to the airport, railway stations, and other bus stands.
The Student Gymkhana aims to bring students together for their all-round development and acts as a link between students and administration. Sports facilities include football, volleyball, cricket, basketball, and athletics.
The Student Mentor Program offers students the opportunity to interface with the real world. Laboratories and workshops provide students with hands-on experience in various technical, scientific, and mathematical skills. Workshops cover topics such as hand and power tools, measuring and marking, welding, and fiber reinforcement polymers.
Scholarships are available for students with the best academic records. For first-year students, scholarships will be based on Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA) and for second to fourth-year students, it will be based on Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA).
Medical services are provided by a 50-bed Ordnance Factory Hospital that offers secondary level health care in various specialties, such as general medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, anesthesiology, and pathology.
