IIT Guwahati is a premier engineering and technology institute established in 1994 by the Government of India. It is located in Guwahati, Assam and has a sprawling 285-hectare campus on the north bank of the river Brahmaputra. The institute offers B. Tech, B. Des, M. Tech, Ph.D, and M.Sc. programs through its 11 departments covering major engineering and science disciplines. The institute is fully residential and all students are required to reside in their assigned hostels. The academic complex covers 74,000 square meters and houses classrooms, labs, and academic departments, while the administrative building houses the institute’s offices. The IIT Guwahati started its academic program in 1995 with three departments and now has 11 departments and three academic centers for teaching and research.

Transportation – It is around 20 km from the heart of the city and around 35 minutes drive from the airport.
Commuting to the Institute from the city – For commuting from the station to the North Guwahati campus, tata sumos and auto-rickshaws are available. IIT Guwahati has also its own transportation facilities to ply to and fro from North Guwahati campus to the city.
Flights to Guwahati – There are direct flights from Delhi and Kolkata offered by Indian Airlines, Air Sahara, Jet Airways, Air Deccan, Kingfisher, Spicejet, Indigo. Fares of direct flights ex-Delhi starts at around Rs.3000 (conditions apply). Connecting flights via Kolkata are available and the charge is around Rs.5000 (Economy Class). Getting to the IITG from the airport (which may take around 40 minutes) will cost another Rs.300 in a reserved taxi.

Other Transport – Taxis are available for transport within the city also but are without meters and fares have to be negotiated and the same applies to auto-rickshaws. There is also an extensive network of city bus services.
Faculty
IIT Guwahati provides student hostels with single-seater rooms equipped with modern amenities, including sports and recreational facilities, network connectivity, and a canteen. The Institute has IT facilities such as a campus computer network, leased internet and email lines, and all faculty and staff members are provided with PCs. The Central Library has 72,000 volumes of books and non-book material. The Institute has several academic centers including the Center for Energy, Environment, Nanotechnology, Computer and Communication Center, Central Instruments Facility, Center for Educational Technology, Center for Mass Media Communication, NPTEL, and Entrepreneurial Development Cell. The Institute conducts research under all its departments and academic centers. It offers several scholarships and awards, including the President of India Gold Medal, Institute Silver Medals, Shankar Dayal Sharma Gold Medal, Merit-cum-Means Scholarships, Merit Scholarships, and the IWAB scholarship. There are two banks with ATM facilities and a Post office.
